The Carton Council of North America has received a Trashies award from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and Smithers Pira, in the Partnership category.

The Trashies awards are part of the annual SUSTPACK conference to recognize people behind sustainable packaging.

We appreciate this award for recognizing the Carton Council for its progress to increase carton recycling in the US through strong private-public collaboration,” said Derric Brown, VP, sustainability, the Carton Council and director, sustainability, Evergreen Packaging.

Industry engagement and public/private collaboration is central to the Carton Council’s strategy. It includes ensuring there are viable end markets and sorting facilities that accept cartons in place and educating consumers.

By working with material recovery facilities, paper mills, county and municipal governments and state recycling organizations, the Carton Council has gone from recycling 18% of US household food and beverage cartons to 53%.
