Snack makers need a better and more open discourse with NGOs and government about efforts made to improve the nutritional profile of their products, says the director general of the European Snacks Association.

Speaking exclusively to BakeryandSnacks.com last week at Snackex 2013 in Gothenburg, Sweden, Sebastian Emig said that working with NGOs and government is all about communication.

He said that often efforts to reformulate go unrecognized but industry must work harder to communicate such moves openly.

Emig said that some manufacturers are too conservative in their communication efforts with these organizations.

“We have to work closer with them. Let’s sit around a table, discuss.”

“We definitely as a sector are open, we reach out to them. And I think with the coalition – to have these three parties round the table; policy makers on the one side, on the other side the NGOs and consumer representatives and we as an industry – if we have an informed dialogue and we come out with results on… whatever the topic might be, and communicate that in a broad band to the consumer, I think that would change the climate slowly but surely.”
