ABB has won a contract to supply a UniSec medium voltage secondary distribution switchgear at Nestlé’s Buitoni frozen foods plant in Benevento, Italy.

The system is scheduled to be put into service this month and includes REF615 protection relays, IEC61850 communication protocol GOOSE messaging, and MV/LV selectivity study.

Smart Grid communication

Corrado Guarnieri account manager, ABB, said it is the firm’s first project for the Nestlé Group.

He said REF615 relays are able to communicate with each other and the power grid control system.

Communication via Ethernet cable or wireless network, based on the IEC61850 protocol, ensures rapid intervention and configurations for connections to Smart Grids as well,” he added.

The installation will be carried out by Elettrica Rizzi, based in Bergamo, Italy.

Plant expansion

The expansion of the power grid is part of a broader project to boost the plant's production capacity.

In December last year, Nestlé announced a €48m ($51m) investment to transform the Benevento plant, currently focused on the domestic market, into an 'international hub' for the development of professional skills and the production of Buitoni pizzas.

The lines will be upgraded in parallel with the introduction of technologies that will take the Campania-based Nestlé factory to a new level of excellence, to bring its products to foreign markets.

The UniSec air insulated medium voltage switchgear offers up to 24 kV, 1250 A, 25 kA and is manufactured in ABB’s plant in Dalmine, Italy.

According to ABB, it allows design of customized solutions, easy modifications, fast replacement and upgrading of the main accessories. Thanks to fewer component parts, less resources are needed for their maintenance and staff training.

UniSec switchgear is designed and tested in accordance with IEC 62271-200 standards.
