Frito-Lay recalls potato chips due to Salmonella concerns

Examples of the recalled products

Frito-Lay is recalling some potato chips in the US and Canada due to possible Salmonella in the seasoning.

It comes after a supplier’s recall of a seasoning blend which included jalapeño powder that could contain the pathogen.

Although no Salmonella was found in the seasoning supplied to the unit of PepsiCo, Frito-Lay decided to recall the potentially affected Jalapeño Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked potato chips and Jalapeño Flavored Miss Vickie’s Kettle Cooked potato chips.

All sizes of the two products that have a “guaranteed fresh” date of JUL 4 or prior printed on the package have been recalled in the US.

The action affects multipacks that have a “use by” date of JUN 20 or prior on the multipack package: 12 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Sack, 20 x Frito-Lay Bold Mix Sack, 30 x Miss Vickie’s Multipack Tray, 30 x Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Tray and 32 x Miss Vickie’s Multipack Box.

Frito-Lay said it was working with the FDA to ensure recalled products are removed from stores and are no longer distributed and advised consumers who have purchased recalled products not to consume them.

Miss Vickie's Canada recalled Miss Vickie's brand Jalapeño Kettle Cooked Potato Chips 40g, 66g and 420g with All "Guaranteed Fresh" dates up to and including JN 20.

No illnesses have been confirmed to date.

Jalapeño Cheddar Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked 40% Less Fat potato chips are not impacted.

The products were distributed in retail stores and via foodservice, vending and other channels throughout the US and nationally at retail level in Canada.

Salmonella concerns in seasoning also affected Conagra Brands earlier this month.

The firm withdrew Hunt’s Chili Kits due to potential Salmonella in the chili seasoning packet of the kit.

As both brands did not name the supplier it is unclear if the incidents are connected.
